Slots and video poker

Why are Vegas casinos full of slot machines? Simple: because people love to play them. And given that no casino game gives you more scope for hitting a massive payday it's not hard to see why.

The object of any slot machine is to spin a winning combination of symbols. Some combinations are worth more than others, and the ultimate aim for any slot player is to strike it lucky and hit the jackpot.

One of the best things about slots is that they're easy to play. All you need to do is decide;

How many lines you want to play. The more lines you play, the more chances you have of winning.
And how much you want to bet on each line. The more you bet, the bigger the payouts when you win. Remember though, that the amount you bet applies to each line, so betting 50c a line but playing 50 lines means you'll be betting a total of $25 each spin.

Rake against the machine

There are more than ten types of Video poker in the PKRCasino and two with progressive jackpots up for grabs.

Video poker games play out in a similar fashion to five-card draw but without an opponent, so your aim is to get the best hand possible. As with slots you only need to decide;

How many lines (this basically duplicates your starting hand) you wish to play and how much you want to stake on each line.
When your five cards are dealt you must then choose which ones you want to 'hold' - this becomes your starting hand - the others will be replaced by new cards in the next deal of the round. You can hold as many as you want but your decisions must be wise if you want to stand a chance of making good hands.

Each video poker game has its own theme but all pay out according to video poker hands (see explanation of video poker hands below). In both normal games and progressives you'll really want to hit the Royal Straight Flush. Do this and you'll be laughing your way to the bank with the maximum payout.

Slots and Video poker games may look wonderfully colourful and complex but they all follow the same principles. Don't be afraid to try out new ones and don't forget you can always practise with play money before you stick real cash on the line.

Video poker hands explained

In video poker hitting the following hands guarantees you a prize - how much you get depends on the game you play, how much you stake and how many lines of cards you bet on:

Jacks or Better - a pair of Jacks or cards of higher value. The cards have to be of equal value, e.g. Q, Q.
10s or Better - same as Jacks or Better, but the cards have to be at least Ten in value.
Kings or Better - same as Jacks or Better, but the cards have to be at least King in value.
Two Pair - two separate pairs of equal value cards, e.g. 10, 10, K, K
Three of a Kind - three cards of the same value, e.g. 8, 8, 8.
Straight - Five cards consecutive in value, but not in the same suit, e.g. 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. If the cards are in the same suit as well, it is a Straight Flush (see below).
Flush - Any five cards in the same suit, but not consecutive in value, e.g. 4 of Diamonds, 8 of Diamonds, 9 of Diamonds, J of Diamonds, K of Diamonds.
Full House - a combination of a Three of a Kind and a pair, e.g. 8, 8, 8, J, J.
Four of a Kind - four cards equal in value, e.g. 5, 5, 5, 5.
Four 2's Through 10's - same as Four of a Kind, but the cards have to be 10 or lower in value.
Four Jacks, Queens or Kings - same as Four of a Kind, but the cards have to be J or higher in value, but no higher than K.
Four Aces - a Four of a Kind consisting of Aces.
4 Deuces - a Four of a Kind consisting of 2's.
Straight Flush - five cards consecutive in value and in the same suit, e.g. 5 of Clubs, 6 of Clubs, 7 of Clubs, 8 of Clubs, 9 of Clubs.
Five of a Kind - five cards of the same value. Since there are only four suits, this combination can only occur in games with a wild card, such as Deuces Wild and Joker Poker.
Royal Flush - Ace, King, Queen, Jack and 10 all in the same suit.
Wild Royal Flush / Joker Royal Flush - same as Royal Flush, with one or more cards substituted by a wild card.
Natural Royal Flush - same as Royal Flush but with no wild cards.
