There are two things you should know about baccarat. One, it's cool and was James Bond's game of choice before he discovered poker in Casino Royale. Two, it's a game loved by high rollers the world over and casinos in Asia can see hundreds of thousands of dollars staked on each hand. Got you interested? Read on to find out how you can get a piece of the action.
One of the great things about baccarat is that it's fast paced and very simple to play.
The aim of the game is to draw a two or three card hand that is closer to 9 than the dealer's hand. All cards are face value (so a 7 is worth 7), except aces which are worth 1 and 10s, jacks, queens or kings which are worth 0. If your hand totals more than ten, you simply drop the ten. For example, if you were dealt 8-9 (totalling 17), your hand would be 7.
Once you have placed your bets, both the banker and player draw two cards each. If either hand totals 8 or 9 then that hand (regardless of whether it is the banker or player) must stand.
If the player's hand is 5 or less, they will draw a third card automatically. If a player's opening hand is 6 or 7, the player must stand.
If the player stands, the banker draws a third card if their hand total is 5 or less.
If the player receives a third card, then the banker draws a third card if;
The chart below shows what the banker will do in all of these cases (H = hit; S = stand)

In Baccarat there are three bets you can make. You can;
That's all there is to it - It's virtually a coin-toss! Bear in mind that when going for the attractive tie bet, an additional bet on either your hand or the banker's hand could turn out to be a useful insurance. Don't forget that baccarat also has a one of the lowest house edges so there's great value in every bet you make.
In baccarat the progressive jackpot adds another twist to your potential payout. To play the jackpot game, you must make a side bet by placing a chip on the flashing slot on the table. The flashing light will turn green once your bet is registered.
To win a progressive the outcome of the game must be a tie. The prize amount paid out depends on which cards are held by the banker and the player:
| Tie | Payout |
|---|---|
| Player suited Ace+8 Banker matches |
100% of jackpot |
| Player suited Ace+8 Banker (a different) suited Ace+8 |
10000x side bet amount |
| Player & Banker any Ace+8 | 1000x side bet amount |
| Natural 9 | 25x side bet amount |
| Natural 8 | 20x side bet amount |
| Natural 7 | 15x side bet amount |
| Natural 6 | 10x side bet amount |
Note that a 'Natural' total is one which occurs without going into double figures. So if you were dealt 9-9 (totalling 18) although your hand is rounded down to 8, it would not be a 'Natural 8'.
